4/17/20 Update

Governor Pritzker and the Illinois State Board of Education have extended the period for school closings for the remainder of the school year.  This decision has many implications for our students, families and teachers and we will continue to update you as we adjust to this new development.  We understand this announcement will bring forth many questions regarding end of year activities.  Please be patient as we work through the details.  Information will be communicated to families via School Messenger and the district website as soon as it becomes available.  

We will continue to follow the remote learning schedule that has been in place since Spring Break.  For those families who do have a device at home that students can use to access the internet, teachers will continue to post choice boards and activities online in the Microsoft Teams platform. These are also posted on the district website and paper copies will be mailed home to those students without access to the internet.  Please inform someone from your school during the daily call if you are not receiving the packets and you need them.

Student attendance is being recorded during remote learning.  All students must log in to ClassLink each day to be considered present at school.  Access ClassLink here - https://launchpad.classlink.com/bsd111 

Grab and go breakfast and lunch options are still available at all Burbank School District 111 K-6 school buildings.  Mondays – Fridays during the times listed on the schedule below. This program covers ALL students from all D111 schools as well as all parochial, private, and high schools in the area; no student ID cards required. Children do not need to be present for pick-ups.  There are no financial requirements to receive a meal; all children are eligible.  Meals should be requested for only the children living in your own household and are limited to one pick up per day.

4/5/20 Update

With all of the uncertainty in the world right now, we want to do our part to be as consistent and available for your children as much as possible. Although there has been much change to the way we all manage and interact in our daily life, the one thing that has not changed is our dedication to your children. Per Governor Pritzker’s orders, schools will remain closed until April 30, 2020.   Effective Wednesday, April 8 we will begin Remote Learning, a new chapter in public education. Fortunately for our Burbank 111 students and staff, we have been working for many years with digital learning. Transitioning to a full digital platform was not something that was expected for any of us this school year, and although it will present some challenges, we feel confident that our students and staff will make this a successful few weeks of instruction and learning. 

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, teachers will be planning for the Remote Learning launch and will not be available to students online.

The following is expected for Instruction & Learning on regular attendance days between April 8 - April 30. Please note that teachers will be participating in a teacher inservice on April 15, 2020 and will not be available online.

  • Attendance  Students must log in to Class Link each day to be considered present at school
  • Teachers will be online to instruct and assist students from 9:00 am - 10:30 am and again from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.  During these times, teachers will communicate to their families what assignments are expected through Microsoft TEAMS or programs on Class Link such as:  Wonders, Reading A to Z, Lexia, Khan Academy, Mathia, Study Island, or Freckle. This will be very much dependent on what programs your child's teacher currently uses.  Teachers may be using other apps like ClassDojo or Remind to communicate with families during this time as well.
    • Please refer to your child's teacher to get clarification on his/her expectation regarding which platform they will be using for assigning lessons.
  • Microsoft TEAMS  Instructions for accessing the TEAMS app can be found on the District website.
    • Directions for accessing Microsoft TEAMS
    • Please know that TEAMS allows students and teachers to chat with each other online. It is expected that this function will be used for appropriate school related communication only.  If students use the chat function in any unexpected way, they will lose the ability to chat with classmates.
    • Students may have a TEAM for each content area.
    • Teachers may be setting up online MEETINGS to share mini lessons and content with their class.

  • Band  If your child needs their instrument, please contact your building principal to arrange a time for pick up or delivery
  • Packets  Grade level learning packets were created to support families during the initial unexpected "Act of God" days. With the implementation of Remote Learning, packets will no longer be mailed home.  If you cannot access the Remote Learning activities at home, please let your teacher or principal know when they reach out to you by phone.
  • Remote Learning Plan  The district has published its Remote Learning Plan on our website.  Parents can access that plan here.  Included in the plan are suggested Daily Schedules for Families to follow in order to maintain a sense of regularity and normalcy during these uncertain times.

4/1/20 Update

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continuously adjust to the COVID 19 health crisis.  In accordance with the governor’s order, the district will suspend in-person instruction through April 30.   We are currently updating our remote learning plan in accordance with directives from the Illinois State Board of Education.  Remote learning will resume after spring break on Monday, April 6.   Please continue to check the district website for additional information on meal pick up and other resources available to our families.

3/22/20 Update

As we move into the second week of our school closing, we are encouraged to see that everyone continues to follow the guidelines regarding social distancing and healthy habits.  We are all making changes to our everyday routines in response to this situation and will get through this together.

The governor and State Board of Education have extended the period for school closings until at least April 7, 2020.  This means that students will not return to school until Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at the very earliest.  The State Board cautions that this date may change, and later this week, ISBE will issue guidance regarding closing dates. At this time, ISBE contemplates that districts will eventually transition to Remote Instructional Days.  We will keep you updated with this information as it becomes available.

This second week of the closing still falls under the state definition of Act of God days, meaning the work assigned to our students is not required to be completed or made up when we eventually return to school.  Lessons and activities are to be used in order to keep students engaged and give parents direction as to the type of work students should be completing.  The curriculum department has sent out packets to those families who do not have a device or internet access at home, but still wish to maintain a regular schedule of learning for their students.

For those families who do have a device at home that students can use to access the internet, teachers have posted lessons and activities online in the Microsoft Teams platform that we will be using for remote learning.  Instructions for accessing this app can be found below.  For most of our students, this will be the first time they have accessed this platform, and they will likely need some guidance in setting it up on their devices.  We expect that this week will be a time for students to practice getting on the app and using the features available. Teachers will be online from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm each day to connect with students, answer questions and help them navigate the Teams app. This will be a learning experience for all of us, so we truly appreciate your patience as we work through any issues and your feedback as we launch this remote learning app.

If you have difficulty downloading the app on your device, you may send an email to athomehelp@bsd111.org.  One of our staff will respond to your question as soon as we can.

Narragansett, on the south side of the building at door #9.  Food is being distributed in a drive-thru model, in order to comply with social distancing guidelines. We’d like to send a big thank you to our food service workers, who report to work each day so this program can continue!

3/20/20 Update

In order to do our part to encourage social distancing and prevent further spread of the disease, the district will close all buildings beginning Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3.   

Teachers and staff will continue working from home to stay in contact with our students and families, and to help answer questions you may have.

Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions: 

  • Breakfast and lunch distribution at Tobin will continue next week. From March 23 - 27, breakfast and lunch will be available for pickup at Tobin School, 8501 S. Narragansett, on the south side of the building at door #9.  Food is now being distributed in a drive-thru model, to prevent congregation.
  • There will be no food service during Spring Break, March 30 - April 3.
  • If your student does not have an electronic technology device, please share that information with a staff member when they call.  We continue to work on a plan to get these students devices and will definitely make note of it. We are doing the best that we can, thank you for your patience!  
  • If you do not have an electronic device, paper learning packets for your student will be mailed home next week. 
  • Digital Lessons will be available online beginning Monday for your students.

  • Part-time staff (meal supervisors, crossing guards, PASS employees, part-time custodians) will continue to receive regular paychecks of average pay during the school closure.

3/18/20 Update

The situation surrounding COVID-19 is constantly evolving, and administration is working hard to ensure our community has up-to-date information.  As you may already know, the State of Illinois has declared the school closing between March 17 and March 30, “Act of God” days that do not need to be made up at the end of the school year.  

All work done by students during this time will not be turned in or graded, but it is our expectation that during this time that our teachers will stay connected to our students, and use our resources to assist our families and keep students engaged in their learning over the next week. Teachers will assign lessons and activities through March 27 so parents can continue to guide their students’ learning. 

Monday, March 30 is the first day of our scheduled Spring Break.  During this week, no specific lessons will be assigned to students, and teachers will not be online, but students will still have access to all of the same resources they had in the past in order to continue learning.  These can be found under the Resources link on our home page.

For your information, here is the difference between emergency days and Act of God Days:

e-Learning Days:

  • Are used in place of “Emergency” closure days
  • Count as an Instructional day on school calendar
  • Student attendance is required
  • Assignment expectations and student work completion are required
  • Staff availability window in which families and students can connect

Act of God Days: 

  • Do not need to be made up at the end of the school year
  • Do not count as student attendance days
  • Students are not required to participate
  • Suggested projects and assignments are not graded or negatively affect student grading 
  • The goal is to provide a “continuity of education” for students during a school closure by providing learning resources and opportunities for students.
  • Families have flexibility over the types of learning and time dedicated to learning
  • Allow for instructional staff to engage with students or families in a supportive and flexible fashion.

We are currently scheduled to resume school on Monday, April 6th.  As this situation evolves, that may change. We will continue to provide updated information to families and staff as it becomes available.

Our goal is to provide learning opportunities for your children to maintain continuity of learning.  The most important thing we can do during this time is stay connected. The relationship between teachers and students is invaluable.  Thank you for your support and patience during this challenging time.

3/17/20

This message is for District 111 families.   Due to the lengthy closure of schools, it is imperative we continue education for our students during this time.  This week, students should be completing the paper packets sent home with them on Monday. Today we had a conference call with all teachers providing direction for the upcoming weeks.  We are currently working on a plan to continue providing educational materials and lessons for your children to work on from home. 

In the meantime, our teachers and support staff will be in contact with their families regularly.  Additionally, all student medication normally kept at school has been moved to a secure location at the District Office at 7600 S. Central Ave.  If you feel you need to pick up your child's medication, it will be available for pick up between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.   The district will continue to monitor the situation and post regular updates as well as guide our teachers and staff along the way.  Please be patient and flexible during this process.  We are all in this together.
